DIY: Install Any Kind of Ceiling Fan On Your Own
Do you use a living room that could utilize a ceiling fan to cool it down? The installation of a ceiling fan is as simple as replacing your current light fixture. All of the wires you need is already available so the only thing is to replace the present work box with one that is developed for the weight of a ceiling fan. If you dont change the current work box to something that can handle the weight could cause disaster. Before you perform anything, read the instructions for your fan very thoroughly and make sure that you have the essential tools.
If you are hanging the fan on a cathedral ceiling, you may want to obtain additional parts for extending the fan straight down lower. Any time you are prepared to put in the fan, make sure that the circuit breaker is off so you wont get electrocuted. Eliminate the light fixture, and decide if the work box that is already there can cope with the added weight. In many cases, the work box will never be able to hold the extra weight so you may need further support. To add new support, you merely nail a 2×4 between the ceiling rafters so it touches the top of the work box. Ensure the 2×4 is anchored in its place, and then bolt the box to the wood. If you did it correctly, the excess weight of the fan really should be effectively supported by the 2×4 wood and screws. In cases where you are incapable to do it from the attic or you have simply no attic, you will need to include a cross bracing in your ceiling. This is tougher to do, and perhaps not as secure in the end, but will have to do with no attic entry.
After you have put the fan together in line with the instructions, you are ready to install the fan to your light fixture. The challenging part is joining the wiring while retaining the fan. It depends on the type of fan you have, many come with a bracket with a J hook while others have a hanging frame. For many fans the wall switch will turn the device on or off, and the chain will handle the speeds. The next task is to follow the wiring details which are as basic as hooking up two white wires, two black wires and two ground wires.
