Do modern fighter planes have the same issue with push to talk radios as civilian aircraft do.?
That is, that when the PTT button is pressed, you cant hear anything on that comm channel. Or is the fighter to fighter com technology more like a conference call on the same frequency . Its seems to me that it would put pilots at a disadvantage to not be able to hear something on the radio. Not to mention, i can see how it can be pretty annoying to have to push a button in the middle of a dog fight. Just morbid curiosity !
See.. i would think that they would have some encryption , but encryption causes lag. And in Air combat LAG is not something you want. I know they have something similar to email to transmit orders that does have encription, but im talking about audio comm, specifically fighter to fighter comms
In military aircraft keying the mike button on the throttle is the equivalent of picking up the phone on an old fashioned party line. Everyone on the frequency can hear everything you hear and say. Only one person can speak at a time. By listening you pick up a lot of valuable information about what is going on and it relieves you from making a transmission. There are discreet frequencies for each squadron and common frequencies i.e. tower, that everybody monitors when appropriate.
